COMING OF (R)AGE RITUAL
- Date: 12 December
- Time: 20:30
- Location: Het Nationale Theater, Zaal 3
In this ritual, XILLAN seeks to free himself from the pigeonholing culture he has had to navigate as a Surinamese queer person and immigrant in order to survive in society. In his quest, he discovers the forgotten hero Edgar Cairo, a Surinamese writer who called himself the Second Black Son of God, but whose legacy is at risk of being lost.
In this musical ritual, XILLAN chooses to believe him. What if he truly was the Second Black Son of God? He enters into a dialogue with Edgar, allowing Edgar’s revolutionary spirit to possess him, so he can continue the work Edgar had been engaged in long before XILLAN was born: building new worlds.
This performance is part of the COMING OF (R)AGE trilogy, which consists of XILLAN’s debut novel MENSEN ALS ZONNEN EN MENSEN ALS MANEN, his debut album SON, and the theater performance where all three disciplines converge.
About XILLAN
XILLAN (Xillan Macrooy) is a Surinamese-Dutch storyteller working across music, literature, and theater. As a product of multiple worlds, the continual transformation of identity plays a central role in his work. In 2025 and 2026, he explores new ways as a creator to celebrate his multiplicity, aiming to build new artistic worlds that honor both (Surinamese queer) legacy and innovation.
