Artificial Justice - MtM On Tour

  • Date: 08 February
  • Time: 15:00
  • Location: Filmhuis Den Haag

The Spanish government announces a referendum to approve an Artificial Intelligence Justice system for all Spanish courts. In practice, the system will replace every judge in the country. The referendum unleashes a fierce debate between two groups: the government, which promises to unclog and depoliticize the justice system using Spanish AI software, and the judges, who defend the exclusively human dimension of justice. The death of Alicia Kovack, the software’s creator while travelling in a self-driving car, sets off alarms. It is only the tip of the iceberg of a conspiracy to try and control the country’s justice system.

After the screening, we welcome Dr. Maša Galič for a Q&A. Maša is an Assistant Professor of Privacy and Criminal (Procedure) Law at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminology of the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam. Prior to this, she was a researcher at the Tilburg Institute for Law, Technology and Society (TILT; Tilburg University). Maša obtained her PhD in 2019 at TILT on the topic of privacy and surveillance in public space, using the example of the ‘Stratumseind Living Lab’ in Eindhoven. In 2014, she obtained a master's degree (summa cum laude) in Law & Technology from Tilburg University. She has a graduate degree in law (bachelor and master's degree) from the Law Faculty in Ljubljana (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia). Maša is also a member of the Amsterdam Law and Technology Institute (ALTI) and an affiliate of the Dutch Police Lab AI.
