TIERGARTEN

  • Date: 02 May
  • Time: 20:15 - 21:45
  • Location: Theater aan het Spui

In this musical performance, a diverse group of performers looks back on the mass murder of psychiatric patients in Nazi Germany. Those who could not work, learn, or be cured were considered economically useless and received unsolicited euthanasia. The most systematic phase of this ‘purge’ is known as T4, an abbreviation of Tiergartenstrasse 4, the address where the program was conceived and organized.

This poignant story is presented as a collective narrative. The actors alternately play perpetrators, victims, family members, witnesses, and themselves. Through the collaboration with the DoelenEnsemble, it becomes music theatre. Christine Cornwell (violin) and Maarten van Veen (piano) of the DoelenEnsemble perform both Beethoven and contemporary music.

With this performance, we shed light on a relatively unknown history that remains relevant today and deserves a place in our collective memory.

TIERGARTEN aligns with the national commemoration of the Second World War and the celebration of 80 years of freedom. A freedom that is not self-evident and must be fought for again and again. Especially in the present time.
