Free Heri Heri For All is a nationwide initiative in which free heri heri meals are distributed on July 1 the day of Keti Koti, as a form of remembrance, recognition and connection. Heri heri is a traditional dish that has its origins in the slavery period and symbolizes survival and resilience. The project invites people to reflect together on the shared past and build collective awareness.
Heri Heri is a traditional Afro-Surinamese dish of cassava, sweet potato, plantain, salted fish and an egg. But it is more than just food: it tells the story of resilience and creativity of enslaved people who managed to create a rich culinary tradition with limited resources. Today, Heri Heri is a source of spiritual and cultural connection.
By offering meals for free, we bring people together, keep tradition and culture alive, and strengthen community. Anyone may join, because: if one eats, we all eat.
